How John and Bridget McCabe escaped poverty to give a better life to their children and grandchildren

ONE OF THE MILLIONS OF STORIES OF THE IRISH DIASPORA

Emigration and Separation

John and Bridget McCabe lived in Maghernaharny, near Rockcorry in Ematris Parish, County Monaghan, Ireland. They were dispossessed of their farm in 1876 and struggled to find a better life for their children

Katherine McCabe was sent to an aunt in Pittsburgh when she was ten years old and never saw her parents again. Another daughter, Mary, followed but eventually settled in Australia.

The eldest son James migrated to Australia in 1883 and managed to save enough money to sponsor the remaining family as immigrants as well.

The McCabes lived in Sydney until the Western Australian gold rush of the 1890′s. When Bridget moved with some of her children to Boulder City near Kalgoorlie, her husband John decided to return to Ireland.

This is the story of their life in Ireland, Pittsburgh, Sydney and the Australian Outback.
